Blinken OSA seeks to broaden its teaching portfolio each year. We are happy to announce that along with the courses offered to CEU students a new teaching cooperation with the ELTE University began recently. With the pandemic years hopefully behind us, this year Blinken OSA colleagues were able to participate in the annual Orientation Sessions at CEU Vienna, presenting the latest information about the Archives and the new courses launched this year. Since the mother institution relocated to Vienna, lecturers from Blinken OSA now have to commute in order to maintain professional links with the various departments and students.

International Day for Universal Access to Information
Posted: 27/September/2022
Pandemics and wars create unfavorable environments for the prevalence of freedom of information, however, its importance is manifest during such periods the most. The approach and active contribution of archives dealing with the recent past play an important role here, and Blinken OSA has its share in this.
Vera and Donald Blinken
Posted: 23/September/2022
The Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archives at the Central European University is sad to share the news of Donald Blinken’s passing. We lost an exemplary public figure, for whom the tireless service of the public, the unwavering devotion to higher education, art, and the democratization process, were of paramount importance. Blinken OSA has been carrying the names of Vera and Donald Blinken since 2015; we mourn a prominent diplomat, a good human being, a friend of the Archives and CEU. We have our hearts go out to his wife, Vera Blinken, and his family.

The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine has been raging for more than five months by now. In these circumstances, expressing solidarity as well as professional and academic support to Ukrainian students, scholars, and researchers threatened by the military invasion remains to be an important objective at CEU and Blinken OSA. One such initiative the Archives has joined and worked on since it was launched by CEU in May 2022 is the certificate program for junior and senior undergraduate students from Ukraine, the Invisible University for Ukraine. Colleagues from the Archives were actively teaching and mentoring in the program that was designed as a pilot for students and scholars at risk. In July, the CEU IUFU program continued with the summer school program titled Making Ukraine Visible – Images, Narratives, Institutions, which took place from July 10–19, 2022, in the CEU complex in Budapest and in Lviv.

Iván Székely, Senior Research Fellow at Blinken OSA, a founding member of the annual conference Computers, Privacy, and Data Protection (CPDP), organized and moderated a panel discussion on “Data Protection Authorities and the Covid-19 Pandemic” in Brussels on May 23. This was the 10th-panel discussion in a row on some aspects of the activities of the DPA,  a frequently underestimated actor in the protection of personal data, which Szekely, together with Professor Charles Raab of the University of Edinburgh – both members of the Scientific Committee of CPDP –, have conceptualized, organized and moderated live from the very beginning. This year’s discussion involved Hielke Hijmans of the Belgian Data Protection Authority, Orsolya Reich from the Civil Liberties Union for Europe, and Sjaak Nouwt representing the Royal Dutch Medical Association.
