Chachipe Youth

chachipeyouthChachipe is an international online photography competition announced and organized by the Open Society Institute and OSA Archivum under the aegis of the Decade of Roma Inclusion (2005-2015). The contest and its accompanying events, including the main exhibition at the Galeria Centralis, the award ceremony, the winners' tour of the Roma Pavilion at the Venice Biennale and a traveling exhibition, are intended to combat visual stereotypes and to provide an authentic portrait of the Roma as an integral part of their broader national communities.

The contest resulted in almost 1,000 photographs being submitted by 270 applicants from 25 countries. The traveling exhibition was put on display across Europe in cities from Brussels to Bucharest, and was also hosted in several smaller towns in Hungary with the help of the National Association of Local Municipalities (“TÖOSZ”).

Building on the success of Chachipe, we have recently launched the Chachipe Youth photo contest for young Roma and non-Roma people aged between 12 and 25.

Chachipe Youth invites young people to use photography to show how they see Roma and their lives. The contest has three categories: “My Street, My Neighborhood,” "My Colorful Life," and "What Is Wrong?" An international jury will award a prize of EUR 1,000 to the winners in three age-groups—12 to 15 years old, 16 to 19 years old, and 20 to 25 years old—within each of these categories. The deadline for entering photos is January 31, 2009. http://photo.romadecade.org
