Scope and content

The subfonds contains periodical and non-periodical publications produced by the respective national units and other units (e.g., General Desk, Office of the Political Advisor, Communist Area Analysis Department) of Radio Free Europe (RFE) and Radio Liberty (RL), both for the employees of the Radios and for external use. The publications, based on materials gathered by RFE from the Communist radio and press, the Free Europe Committee in New York City, and by contributors from inside and outside RFE, provided an immediate assessment and description of developments and new information about ongoing stories. Included are day-by-day monthly lists of forthcoming events and anniversaries of internal affairs, as well as reviews of East European affairs that cover political, economic, and intellectual trends in the Soviet orbit. Of particular value are the publications from the early fifties, such as Reports on Poland from 1951-1953, Magyarországi események (Events in Hungary) from 1950-1956, and Magyarországi Hírek (News of Hungary) from 1955.
