Scope and content

Robert W.Orttung worked at the Research and Analysis Department as a resaerch analyst. He specialized in the Russian domestic politics and wrote extensively on the related topics. In 1995 he published a book From Leningrad to St.Peterburg: Democratization in a Russian City (New York: St.Martin's Press, 1995) and several articles in Transition and Soviet Studies. In 1995-1996 he worked on the book The Battle for the Duma: The Russian Parliamentary Elections of 1995.

The Subject Files that were compiled during this period reflect his research interest and contain materials mostly related to the elections in the Russian Federation. The files provide information on a wide range of the topics: the election campaign, financial issues, main candidates (Zuganov, Yeltsin, Lebed, Zhirinovskii), results including federal and regional, violations during the campaign, voting procedures, and others. The series consists of clippings, news agencies releases and monitoring materials (mostly provided by What Paper Say, Moscow Information Agency), articles and analytical briefs that were published both in the Western and the Russian press and at OMRI.
